In the grand adventure of travel, where winding roads carve through the mountains, two seasoned wanderers, Jayant and Sahil, made Rishikesh their playground. They knew this town like the back of their hands—the bustling ghats, the famous ashrams, and, of course, the little-known gems tucked away between Dehradun and Rishikesh.
One such discovery? Quaint mountain villages, stacked like Lego blocks on the slopes, with hotels bizarrely woven into the rugged terrain. These weren’t your usual tourist traps but rather hidden retreats for those seeking peace, adventure, and perhaps a brief escape from the chaos of city life.
The (Unwanted) Sunrise Plan
As fate would have it, on the eve of an anticipated rafting adventure, Jayant, fueled by either wanderlust or sheer mischief, suggested we chase the sunrise from a vantage point up in the mountains. A grand idea, except for one tiny problem—I had zero enthusiasm for pre-dawn escapades. Our standard wake-up time was 9 AM, a perfectly respectable hour. Who in their right mind would willingly leave a cozy bed to hike in the dark?
Jayant and Sahil, however, had other plans. And because they had the supreme confidence that I, the only semi-responsible one, would wake them up (despite their complete inability to rise early), the decision was sealed.
The Reluctant Journey Begins
Morning came faster than expected, and so did the undeniable regret of agreeing to this madness. Groggy and barely functioning, we stuffed ourselves into the car, skipping all usual morning rituals—brushing, coffee, even the basic will to live—and drove off into the cold, winding roads of the Himalayas.
As we ascended, the fresh mountain breeze slapped us awake, a natural remedy for our sleep deprivation. Soon, the road opened up to a viewpoint, and suddenly, all complaints evaporated. What we saw? Absolute magic.
A View Worth the Sleep Sacrifice
The sky stretched wide, drenched in pre-dawn hues, and the first light of the sun cast golden streaks over the sleeping valley. A crowd had already gathered—travelers, photographers, Instagram influencers doing dramatic poses, and, of course, a handful of foreigners trying to decipher the magic of chai.
Dhanush, Pradeep, and Jayant stood in awe, momentarily silenced by nature’s grandeur. We had, unintentionally, stumbled upon something breathtaking. At the summit stood a small Devi Temple, its entrance reached by an unconventional and rather rugged detour (because why take the proper steps when you can climb like mountain goats?).
The Sun’s Grand Entrance
And then it happened—the moment everyone was waiting for. The sun peeked over the horizon, casting a golden glow across the Himalayan ranges and the shimmering Ganges below. A collective cheer erupted from the crowd. Cameras clicked, arms stretched skyward, and for a brief moment, it felt like a scene out of a travel documentary.
But amidst all this spiritual awakening, my stomach had other priorities. Hunger, the great equalizer, had arrived.
The Unexpected Tea Vendor
A small stall stood nearby, manned by a young vendor selling basic groceries, tea, and coffee. It didn’t take long before I became an unofficial translator for a group of English-speaking foreigners attempting to order chai. While they debated over “less sugar” and “no masala,” I took on the role of a pseudo-tea vendor, orchestrating orders and embracing my newfound responsibility. Who knew my early morning misery would turn into an entrepreneurial venture?
Dhanush’s Big Ask
Just as I was enjoying my self-appointed job, Dhanush crept up with an unusual request. He wanted a picture with some girls from the morning crowd—because, apparently, the sunrise wasn’t the only breathtaking view that day.
With the spirit of a wingman and the confidence of a caffeine-fueled guide, I approached them. To Dhanush’s delight (and absolute horror), they agreed. What followed was a heartwarming, slightly embarrassing, but thoroughly entertaining photoshoot that left Dhanush grinning and the rest of us questioning his newfound boldness.

Wrapping Up the Adventure
As the crowd dispersed and the mountains bathed in full daylight, we began our descent, making our way back to the ashram. The promise of a hearty breakfast lured us forward, marking the perfect end to an adventure that had started with reluctance and ended in laughter, awe, and some unexpected friendships.
In the grand tapestry of travel, it’s these spontaneous moments—the misadventures, the shared laughter, and the unplanned connections—that turn a simple journey into an unforgettable story.
